On Fritzi's Traces - What was it like in the GDR?

The animated documentary series On Fritzis Traces - What was it like in the GDR? brings the late 1980s in the GDR and the events of the political upheaval in autumn 1989 to life. Spanning six fifteen-minute episodes, the series combines fiction and documentary as Julian Janssen and Anna Shirin Habedank embark on a time-travelling journey. Encountering fascinating individuals along the way, they hear first-hand accounts of the emotional experiences of people who lived through this period of transition. Julian and Anna themselves end up as characters in the animated world of 1989. This animated world is based on the series Fritzi and Sophie: Boundless Friendship, which aired on KiKA and MDR from 3 October 2024. The series tells the story of twelve-year-old friends Fritzi and Sophie in eight 22-minute episodes. While Fritzi experiences the Peaceful Revolution in Leipzig in 1989, her best friend Sophie secretly flees to the West with her mother, Kati.

To immerse themselves in the GDR in 1989, Anna and Julian slip into motion capture suits equipped with sensors that transfer their movements to 3D-modelled avatars.
